In 1870, George Sheldon founded the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association located in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He was recognized, by the historians of New England, as one of the best local history writers. George Sheldon also wrote a book called “A History of Deerfield.” The book was basically about the history of Deerfield, from his perspective. O’ Connell mentioned, in his essay, the fact that Sheldon was racist towards Native Americans.
