Individual change theories provide numerous outlets for change, all of which can be enhanced through good educational programming. A liberal arts education may increase moral development, enabling individuals to weigh decisions balancing between moral reasoning and self-interests.
Teaching inmates to think rationally will help them to weigh the cost and benefits of traditional, moral behavior versus crime (Ubah & Robinson, 2003).
Education can also enhance social psychological development through development of cognitive thinking. Participation in education can make prison a more bearable experience, allowing inmates time in a structured and safer environment than the prison yard and keeping them mentally and physically stimulated.
