On a snowy Christmas weekend, a father and his son went skiing on Mont Backer, after sending time on convincing mom. As the boys decide to start heading back, it starts heavily snowing. So the boys decide to go for another few rounds. Hesitant about not leaving on time, the son still agrees to go on a few more slopes. As they begin to head back home it starts snowing heavier and heavier, they’re making their way home slowly, unlit they reach the road to the only way home and noticed it was closed off. No cars allowed. Deciding they were hungry and wanted a bit to eat, the father and son duo decide to stop by a local diner in town. As they wrap up lunch, the father chooses that he will not disappoint his son by not having him home for Christmas Eve dinner with his mother and decides to go through the closed road even though it was forbidden.

Both of the characters in the short story “power” written by Tobias Wolff are very present throughout the whole story. The father is a very free spirited, fun and lively character. That does things on his time and enjoys them. This is show at the beginning of the story where the son expresses that his father took him into “a nightclub during his last visit, to see Thelonious Monk”, and that his mother was very upset. The father is someone who just wants to have fun and make the best of things.
