This week I read the story A Long Walk To Water” by Linda Sue Park. I personally really enjoyed this book. When I first started reading this book I thought that it was not based on a true story, because I could honestly not image the horrific things that Salva went through was true, but it indeed was. I could feel my heart literally breaking into pieces during the times when Salva lost a loved one. Linda Sue Park added so much detail that I could picture what was happening, but I still cannot image going through what Salva went through at such a young age. It really puts into perspective how blessed we are to live in a country like America and how the things that we often complain about are ones that children like Salva dream of.
A quote that really stood out to me was when Salva realized that he was the only one left out of his whole family and that he was alone. “He felt as though he was standing on the edge of a giant hole-a hole filled with the black despair of nothingness. I am along now. I am all that is left of my family” (Park, 2010, pg. 72). This part in the story really pulled at my heart. I truly cannot imagine what Salva was feeling in this exact moment, but as a reader I could feel his pain.
