Image being in Sierra Leone shooting at people, and you see your friend lying on the ground and his internal organs spilling onto ground. In the book A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah became a child soldier, he had to overcome multiple obstacle throughout his journey. Ishmael had to overcome hardships of being affected by war physical, emotional, and social.

At a very young age Ishmael Beah had to endure plenty of physical pain. For instance, when he lost his shoes, he realized what the villagers had done. But it was too late, the soles of his feet were burned from stepping on the hot sand all day. By the end of the day sand was sticking to the burned pieces of skin, to painful to walk. Next Beah has to fight through the pain of being shot in the foot. When he is telling the readers about the horrific pain in his foot, it paints a very clear picture. Before Beah got the bullet remove he endured 6 day of excruciating pain. He told us as the bullet was being removed “The doctor stuck a crooked-looking scissors inside my wound and fished for the bullet. I could feel the edge of the metal inside me. The physical side of things, Beah had no serious injury, being shot in the foot, and burned the bottom of his feet, also having glass in his hands, were just minor physical injuries. From the emotional aspect, Ishmael Beah had to deal with watching his family die right before him. Also trying to go through the rehabilitation center, lastly being to put into another family. In the social form of things, he had a hard time making new friends. Secondly he had to deal with people being afraid of him all the time. Lastly Beah couldn’t keep a girlfriend, because of his past. In the end Ishmael Beah had to survive by making crucial life
