She has heard of stories about people going across dangerous borders and seas, but none as horrific as this one.
A Syrian refuge living in Egypt, she has to pay for her whole family by working long hours. Her dad still thinks about his thriving business in Syria only to be destroyed by a bomb. The war is still raging and the community she lived in was no longer safe; she was almost kidnapped once. Doaa and her to-be-husband, Bassem decided to go to Europe to find a better life. They will have to take a risk by going across the Mediterranean Sea and put themselves in the hands of smugglers. Doaa is scared of the water and doesn’t know how to swim. There were 300 people on the lower deck and 200 on the upper deck. After being at sea for three days, Doaa “said to Bassem, ‘I fear we're not going to make it. I fear the boat is going to sink.’” He says we will make it and have a future. By day four, the people were getting agitated and said to the captain when we will reach land. He insulted them, “Shut up, in 16 hours we will reach the shores of Italy.” A smaller boat spotted their ship and the people on the boat said to get on their boat, but all of the refugees refused because they feared for their safety. The boat left but then returned and started ramming a hole in the side of the refugee’s boat. They laughed, “Let the fish eat your flesh!" as the boat sank. As the boat sank, Doaa watched a child get cut to pieces by a propeller and she and Bassem let go of the boat and found a life ring. He turned to the water and she watched her love of her life drown before her eyes. Later that day, a mother gave a baby, Masa, to Doaa and told her please take care of her; she too let the waters take her down to her grave. On the fourth day at sea, another woman gave a little boy and the woman too, took her life. Later, the boy’s heart stopped and Doaa had to release him into the water. After some time she looked at the sky with hope; two planes crossing the sky, but they soon vanished without taking any notice. As the sun was going done, Doaa saw a merchant ship.
