In both “A Noiseless Patient Spider” by Walt Whitman and “The Soul Selects her own Society” the speakers have attitudes towards the subject of the individual soul and the world. To communicate the speaker's’ attitudes; both Whitman and Dickinson use imagery and word choice. Whitman communicates the speaker’s attitude by conveying how the speaker is trying to make connections to find his place in society while Dickinson conveys how the speaker chooses her own society and shuts herself out.
Whitman uses the imagery of the spider and the speaker being surrounded by nothing to show how isolated they are. However, the spider makes connections by making the web; while the speaker is waiting for resources to help him make the connections he seeks.
