A Raisin in the Sun is a film about a family; the Youngers, who lives in an apartment in Chicago. When the head of the family dies; the grandmother will get an insurance check. Each of the family members have ideas about what to do with the checks comes in on Saturday. This film is about the American dream of owning a house, getting away from the city. It takes place during the era where segregation of African-American families didn’t live in the same neighborhoods as white families did. The family has conflicts with each about how to spend the money, Water Lee has an idea to raise themselves out of poverty, but the plan goes wrong it almost destroys their dreams.
This film relates to this particular unit is that it deals with them dealing with issues that affect their community, such as, that Ruth as a housewife was the stereotypically happy housewife that was shown in the media at the time. Also is examples of racism by socioeconomic practices, the head of white council tried to bribe Water into not moving into their neighborhood. This movie reflects the tensions at this time between both races, and how they (each person) deals with it.
