The author, Langston Hughes, wrote a short autobiography about how he was supposed to be saved, but was not. The title “Salvation”, is ironic because the definition of salvation is to be saved, but at the end of the story Jesus did not save him. Aunt Reed told the narrator that when he sees a light during the special meeting he will be salvage from his sins. He took it into literal meaning and will not stand up from the mourner’s bench until he sees Jesus, which at the end of the day he did not appear. The purpose of him writing this short passage was to give the audience some insight of his loss of faith by expressing his thoughts and feelings in a narration pattern.
