Emily Grierson also known as Miss Emily from “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, is from a time and place where she would be considered a southern belle. Emily lived with her father who was a domineering controlling person. There is no indication of any female influence in Emily’s life. The Griersons were of the aristocracy in Jefferson Mississippi, so her father thwarted any possible suiters Emily may have had. He felt no one was worthy enough for his daughter. Emily’s physical appearance changes through the story as does. She was described as a slender young lady and at the time of her father’s death it was commented that she looked like an angel, like an idol. This was before she met with Homer Barron. Having been protected and shielded from the outside world somewhat by her father, his death took a tole on Emily. For several days after his death she refused to admit he was dead. Finally, after breaking down the people could remove his body from the home. This would be the beginning of signs of eccentricities.
