In a separate peace by John knowles, two unlikely friends, Gene and finny, create a strong friendship at their competitive and lonely boarding school named devon. Fear is a dangerous beast to overcome, it is something that affects and determines your actions and choices. An intellectual and self­conscious Gene constantly struggles with his fear of losing his beloved friend finny, along with a fear of not amounting and achieving his high expectations he sets for himself.
Gene constantly struggles with himself and his choices of actions and decisions he makes. Gene sets out a goal for himself to be the smartest and most intelligent student at devon.

The new attacks of studying were his emergency measures to save himself. I redoubled my effort (Knowles, p.47). Because finny is looked upon as the most athletic boy in devon, Gene begins to desire to be as popular as funny, if not more. This burning desire Gene feels to be the smartest student at devon develops his fear of not achieving his goal because of the mischief finny constantly drags him into.
Gene envy’s Funny, but also greatly desires his friendship and fears losing him as well.
Gene soon realizes and begins to believe that finny is superior than him, which makes gene greatly desire to be exactly like him. Genes opinions and choices soon begin to reflect and contrast finny’s. When Finny returns back to devon after his accident, Gene expresses his great interest in participating and signing up for the war. Surprisingly to gene, Finny shoots down the suggestion of joining because he claims the war is a scam that is produced by fat and rich adults.
