A Short Summary On Suicide Hill

The attack on this position was given the name Suicide Hill for a reason. With troops being driven from Venticinque due to heavy machine gunfire and strong enemy positions, Nyasaland forces had to make “ a long flank march with pact transport from Amba Geogris across the hills to harass the Italian right.” When this was tried, minor casualties resulted, and it was decided that the troops did not need to try to press the advance during that day. Fowkes later met with the fighting force to figure out what to do. Plans were halted due to long heavy rains, which lasted longer than British commanders expected it to. It was vital that the troops took the area so that the building of the Debra Tabor road could help send transports for further attacks.
