A Simple Heart Symbolism

Inspired by the Realistic movement in art and literature, Gustave Flaubert, a French author, wrote “A Simple Heart” about the simple life of the benevolent protagonist, Fèlicitè. Though considered a Realistic story, Flaubert went against the Realistic elements of the supernatural and symbolism. The supernatural and symbolic elements are portrayed through the character Loulou, the pet parrot of Fèlicitè. Loulou exemplifies the actions of a true Christian and can be seen as a metaphor for genuine spirituality in Felicite’s life. It is evident that Loulou is the only good aspect in Felicite’s life. It is clear from the first time Loulou is introduced that Felicite values Loulou as something wonderful. “That day, something wonderful happened: at dinner time, Madame de Larsonnière's negro servant came to the door, holding the parrot in his cage, complete with perch, chain and padlock (3.94).” After experiencing many losses, Felicite is overjoyed to have Loulou and seeks inspiration from him while overcoming hardship. After he dies, Felicite is heartbroken and thus has him stuffed to remember him. She places the stuffed parrot in her room among the other religious objects. Felicite sees Loulou as a resemblance of the Holy Spirit, for that reason she begins to worship and turn to him in prayer. “In church, gazing at the Holy Spirit, she noticed that he had something of the parrot about him. The resemblance was even more striking in a print depicting the baptism of Our Lord. With his purple sings and emerald body, the Holy Spirit was the image of Loulou (4.32-33).” It is apparent that Loulou serves as Felicite’s personal idol and representative of God on earth.
