Li-Young Lee’s poem “A Story” is a touching story of how a father fears his son will grow up too quickly. Lee uses point of view and structure to describe the complex relationship between the father and the son. These literary devices are helpful because they tell the feelings of the father to the reader, making the poem more personal. “A Story”, has a generally positive message until line 10 when the speaker starts to look ahead into his son’s future. The shift in the poem changes the tone to depict a touching scene of the son growing up. The connotation for the later portion of the poem (Line 10-end) is negative since the reader can feel how emotional the father is. Line 11 starts to show his emotion by, him screaming, “Don’t Go!” (Lee).
