When thinking about light in a play you are most likely thinking about the physical aspect of the word. In the play “A Street Car Named Desire “it exemplifies both the physical and figurative meanings of the word. As the play progresses light, not only illuminates both the characters’ physical features, light also displays both the mental prowess and deficiencies of the characters throughout the play. Both the physical and mental meanings of the word light, not only add to the creativity and complexity of the play, but it also enriches the already interesting plot with another element grabbing the reader’s attention. In this particular scene that thoroughly advances the plot in the story Mitch encounters Blanche after Stanley details Blanche’s past and Mitch comes to confront her about it. Before the confrontation Mitch notices the darkness and Blanche responds “I like it dark. The dark is comforting to me” (125). Blanche’s statement at this moment after the reader has seen all of Blanche’s other encounters with people confirms the mental instability of Blanche. This statement demonstrates the false image of life Blanche truly lives. Often light is associated with the truth and Blanche does her best to stray away from light and hide and bask in darkness and live away from reality, away from the problems that occurred at Belle Reve, away from being raped by Stanley, away from being single and lonely. Instead of facing the harsh reality that the light offers Blanche prefers to stay in the dark living away reality, living a fake protective lavish lifestyle. This implementation of light magnifies this scene more than words could have possibly ever
