A Streetcar Named Desire

Throughout the play, Blanche slowly descends into madness. We find out throughout the play that when she was young, Blanche had a husband. We finally found out that he had committed suicide after Blanche had called him out about finding him in bed with a man. Before she left her hometown, she was a school teacher. She says she was taking time off work but what really happened was that she was having a sexual relationship with a seventeen year old student and was fired.
Before going to live with Stella and Stanley, we find out that Blanche stayed at a hotel, “The Hotel Flamingo.” That hotel was known for giving their guests major privacy; so they could do whatever they wanted. When Blanche had stayed there, she became very well known and was kicked out.

She lied about many things in her past and made up a lot of things. When she first talked to Stella, she said that she did not want to go into any light because she had not gotten to bathe and rest. She asks for liquor after the light is turned off; this is the first of many times in the play that she drinks liquor. Stella does not know much about Blanche’s past. She doesn’t know why Blanche’s husband had committed suicide or why she had lost her job. Stanley had his suspicions about her after he met her; he had a feeling that there was something off about her.
Blanche soon met Mitch, who was Stanley’s best friend; she “fell in love” with him after she met him. He seemed to feed into her lies. He believed her and was very surprised that Stanley was rude to her and Stella. He treated her like she was special and she loved it. When Blanche was home alone, a younger man was selling something and she tried seducing him and kissed him. After that, she went on a date with Mitch. That proves that she did not truly care very much about
