The colors used in this painting are a mix of dark and light tones of brown, green, black, grey, and red. The colors used on the man stand out the most as the colors surrounding him are the darkest which makes it difficult to make clear observations about the setting he is in and what surrounds him. Eakins painting that I have selected is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Home Ranch was painted in 1892 and made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eakins’ paintings and portraits are painted with oil on canvas. The history of this painting shows a story. Eakins visited the Bad Lands of the Dakota Territory and returned with a suit that is made out of buckskin. It was then given to his colleague and student to wear for his painting. The setting took place in Eakins’ studio where his student sits and sings with a guitar.
