“A White Heron” by Sarah Orne Jewett tells the story of a nine year old girl, named Sylvia, whose character becomes illuminated in her environment once her grandmother has brought her to live in the rural countryside. As a woman writer in the 19th century, Sarah Orne Jewett’s work was extremely criticized for its feministic content and appearance to the world. Both examples of women during this time can be categorized into a strong position as a woman writer in the 19th century. Sarah Orne Jewett’s story, “The White Heron” accurately describes the many ways that the construction of feminism is brought to light during this time in history.
In addition to examining sexism in the society, “A White Heron” by Sarah Orne Jewett, portrays the resistance that feminist concepts give way to. The main character, goes on a journey that soon discovers the girl who comes from a state of innocence to a state of knowledge about the world around them. Industry is seen throughout the story when the importance of money is discussed. The man offers the protagonist ten dollars to find him the white heron. If she does this, she will get the money, and will make the man very rich. The story revolves around money and how everything relates back to the industrial movement. The relationship between the oppression of nature by humanity’s industrial giant is not unfamiliar to those women who work against the oppression of the male oriented society we have continually lived in. Throughout the entirety of “A White Herson” women are constantly faced with the judgement of the male dominant society.
