From and increase in lawsuits to the “start” of discrimination for some, the ADA has caused conflict. Before its release disabilities activists fought for reform but now that the Act has become a reality some people believe it worsened conditions. Its release in 1990 was a relief for much of the disabled community and leaves people wondering if the ADA harmed more than it helped. These conflicting opinions have and will continue to cause conflict socially, politically, and legally.

In the US alone there are 43,000,000 have a disability, that’s 43,000,000 historically isolated people(Americans with Disabilities Act of 1989). The Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA was ultimately put in place in 1990. Since then two amendments have been made.

However, it has caused conflict between those with conflicting opinions. Greg Perry, a disabled man, is very open about his opinion.According to Perry “It took the ADA to bring about discrimination against the handicapped”(Perry).As a disabled man he observed an increase of discrimination only after the ADA was put in place.”...people weren’t kicking crutches out from under crippled people before the ADA…”(Perry) Be that as it may, people like Jackie Oken are extremely grateful for the ADA. She said.“I would not be able to get a college education and pursue my dream…” (Oken).She and many others have benefitted from the ADA while so many others have suffered. This situation makes many wonder if removing the ADA would be better or worse for the disabled and their community. The Rehabilitation Act outlawed discrimination against the disabled, but it did not include employers(US History.com). The Americans with Disabilities Act went into effect in 1990 and did cover the entity(Americans With Disabilities Act of 1989).Its purpose was to eliminate the discrimination against disabled people because they are historically isolated(Americans with Disabilities Act of 1989). In 2008 the first amendment was made to extend the reach of the ADA. In the amendment, the term disability was broadened so more of the disabled would fit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).It also loosened some restrictions in Title one of the Act that they believed could be restricting the disabled. After years of the Act being abused, an amendment was made in 2016. The term disability was once again broadened to fit more of the disabled under the ADA. Its primary purpose was to enforce the previous amendment, and to build on to the Equal Employment Opportunity
