ADHD Argumentative Analysis

The question brought to the table is if Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) a real disorder? In the article “Is Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder a Real Disorder”, two different opinions were discussed when answering the question. Both sides had a valid argument on whether ADHD is a real disorder or want wasn’t considered a real disorder. After reading both views on the question, I simply examined my own personal experiences with ADHD and compared them to each article. While understanding where Sami Timimi and Nick Radcliffe are coming from in their article, I found that I related to the article by The National Institute of Mental Health more. Based on the article as well as my own experience, I strongly believe that ADHD is a real disorder.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) writes an article that argues how ADHD is considered a mental disorder. Throughout the years the numbers of people who have been diagnosed with ADHD have increased. To diagnose an adult, NIMH explains…”an adult must have childhood-onset, persistent, and current symptoms…diagnosis of adult ADHD is of utmost importance and should be made by a clinician with expertise in the area of attention dysfunction… a history of the patient’s childhood behavior, together with an interview with his life partner, a parent, close friend or other close associate, will be needed.
