AMSA Observation

While observing AMSA, I have become more aware of how education, social class, and politics unite both members and leaders. These social structures influence who will join AMSA, and they provide a common thread that creates a sense of in-group. Because AMSA is limited to pre-health students, members and leaders can easily relate because we are all taking the same course work and pursuing the same field of study. I have realized it is a privilege to be an AMSA member because membership is tied to ascribed statuses such as the social class we are born into. Lower and working class students may not have the financial means, time, or proper networking to successfully pursue a future in medicine, and therefore will be unlikely to join AMSA.
