ANT 345 Week 2 Assignment Analysis

Recently, I was given the task in my Perspectives on Globalization (ANT 345) to inventory items that are in my closet. The goal of this assignment was to demonstrate to me – the student – the interconnectedness of the global market and the globalization of textile production. I must say, I was under the impression that most of my clothes would be from China or some other developing trade partner of the United States. However, that was not the case for my clothing. After taking a sample of 20 items (2 plain, white T-shirts; 8 button-up shirts; 2 pairs of blue jeans; 3 pairs of shorts; 2 pairs of dress pants; 2 ties; and 1 pair of dress shoes), I noticed that my clothing did not say “Made in China,” but rather the names of twelve different countries (Yes, China was one of them). Just noticing that twelve different countries began to show me that the world of textiles was larger than I had thought, which also led me to start to think about the McGill and Knowles readings in which we are introduced to the larger global market. Furthermore, it gave an urge to inquire more about the articles of clothing like Knowles because I am curious of why were leather shoes were made in India; why is the common type of material used in my clothing cotton and polyester; and where else have these items been other than the end location (i.e. the location that is on the “Made in” tag). Knowles and McGill have introduced me to the realm of the global economy and now, I am interested in why those companies make their products in those countries. This assignment has led me to some keen insight on our economy, but also, opened a door to more questions, which I would like to explore
