The title wasn't asking if you need a weapon, in particular, a firearm. You need a firearm, but do you need an AR-15 is the question. Any object can be considered a weapon, but a firearm is a unique weapon, a weapon that has changed the course of history, and one that has allowed humans to become apex predators.
We can face any predator and be on equal ground with the right firearm, and with the right training and most importantly with the will to use said firearm you can come out the winner.
Let's face it, without a way of defending ourselves the common housecat could back us into a corner. They have claws for shredding flesh and teeth that can grip the throats of prey. Can we do that with our fingernails,

Okay an AR-15 can shoot fast right, well it can only shoot as fast as you can pull the trigger, however, and so the myth that it can fire 700 rounds-per-minute is just that a myth.
The M16, which is an automatic rifle, has a "cyclic rate of fire" of 700-800 rounds per minute. The "cyclic" rate of fire, however, is a theoretical measurement of speed and is not an indication of how many rounds could actually be fired in 1 minute according to Michael O’Shea, a professor at Oklahoma City

How fast can you reload, and just what kind of situation would you find yourself in where you would need to fire that fast. The AR-15 is a semi-automatic just like that semi-automatic shotgun, that 9mm pistol you have and that .22 caliber rifle propped in the corner, but it has a reputation that you cannot do anything about, and it will make you stand out.
The reason why we are even asking is because of the AR-15's reputation, as wrong as it might be is still perceived by many that are against firearms as an assault rifle, an assault rifle that in their minds is a combat rifle used for mass shootings. There are those, of course, that purposely misrepresent what it really is. You can't blend in carrying what many people believe to be an assault weapon.
The higher capacity magazine of the AR-15 is what makes it an ideal self-defense weapon. Do you really need to fire 30 rounds downrange, as fast as you can pull the trigger, however? Well, you might in a firefight against an overwhelming force, but if you are in that kind of a situation, then you may have lost the battle before it begins. You would be out of Ammo in short order and if you cannot control the situation in 10 rounds or less then you have a battle on your
