In the short story “Aaron’s Gift,” by Myron Levoy Aaron thinks about his grandmother’s goat she had as a child and says “Her goat has escaped from the Cossacks at last.” Also, the goat and pigeon symbolize freedom.

The meaning of Aaron’s thought is that since the goat got killed by the Cossacks, it is free in a way. The goat has escaped from being in a house all of the time, and instead can go anywhere he wants.
