In the passage we were given, we were told a little bit about Adams, her son, and the voyage he was on. Abigail Adams is the author in the passage and from what we can tell she is most likely upper class because she was able to afford traveling abroad for her son, and is well known for her husband John Quincy Adams. One of the biggest points from the text is that Abigail is hoping her son follow in his father’s footsteps to one day become just as successful. Emotions must have been sky high for the family with her son leaving, him being overseas and being in a foreign land he probably felt out of place.

Throughout the letter Adams challenges, the readers to change their attitude because no matter how hard separation or challenge you are given if it’s something that you live why give up on it. She states “it will be expected for you my son that, as you are favored with superior advantages under the instructive eye of a tender parent your improvements should bear some proportion to your advantages.” Basically stating that she has so much hope and belief in him. I personally was able to connect with the son because I really know what it’s like to want something so bad but get stuck in that factor of what others think but get stuck in that factor of what others think or fear of leaving your comfort zone. I was also able to connect in a mother-daughter way situation and knowing what it’s like to have such a supportive mom and being pushed to always do my best. I think it’s a very important part in life is being able to have that “support system” because it’s not always easy to do everything on your own because things will get tough and you will want to quit but if your passionate you
