In The Crucible written by Arthur Miller the city of Salem was scared and the court was being used for personal gain. Many people went to court accusing people of witchcraft for their own personal gain. It was at the time an easy way to possibly cause who you accuse to die and you can take their land or no longer have to worry about them if you do not like that person. In the story the most despicable character is Abigail Williams because she doesn’t take responsibility, she adds to her lies, and she caused people to die. One reason Abigail is the most despicable character is because she never takes responsibility. There are many times when instead of taking responsibility for her actions she blames someone else. Abigail started the whole thing of accusing other people of witchcraft,”I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” (line 1054). Abigail was the one who started yelling out names and saying they were with the Devil. By doing so she caused those people to go to court for witchcraft and possibly die. She also caused people to hang because after she started yelling out names so did other people like Betty “I saw Alice Barrow with the Devil!” (line 1070) She also did not stop and continued to yell out names, Betty also yelled “ I saw Goody Bibber with the Devil!” (line 1075). Even if Abigail did not directly accuse someone of witchcraft and someone else did she is responsible because she is the one who first started blaming people and gave other people the idea to start accusing others of witchcraft so they can get some gain out of it. Abigail is the most despicable character in the Crucible. She does not take responsibility for her actions, she kept lying and did not stop, and she caused innocent people to hang. While some might say Danforth is more despicable than Abigail they are incorrect. While Danforth kept it going Abigail started it and caused those to die and all the accusations to begin.
