The Crucible is written by Arthur Miller. It is based on the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690’s. There are many people that could be deemed responsible for the innocent Puritans’ deaths, but the ultimate responsibility for the deaths of them is borne by Judge Danforth.
One could say that Abigail is the one mostly responsible for the deaths of the innocent Puritans, because she is the first one to introduce the idea that it could be a witch, but Danforth is the one who is most responsible for numerous reasons. In Act I we learn that Betty Parris and Ruth Putnam are unresponsive. It is thought that the girls are like this because they danced in the woods and conjured spirits as stated by Abigail, “We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam's dead
