Power In the “Barn Burning” Snopes and in the “The Man Who Was Almost a Man” both Dave Saunders and Abner Snopes want to be powerful. They both always feel people are bring them down. Gun and Fire both symbolizes power. To gain the respect they believe they deserves, they both decided to wrong thing for able to be power. For Dave, owning the gun would make people give him the respect he deserves. In “The Man Who Was Almost a Man” gun symbolize authority, masculine, and independence. Dave always felt like he has been treated badly his own. Dave believes he never gotten the respect as man should get. To able be treated like man, he needs to show people who is in charge. So he decided to buy a gun. “Them niggers can’t understan nothing. One of these days he was going to get a gun and practice shooting, then they couldn’t talk to him as though he were a little boy (Wright 1).” For Abner Snopes, fire symbolize his anger, for lack of respect of have for him. Loges points out how name Abner symbolize selfishness and trader in the biblical story in book of Samuel 1 and 2. In Samuel book 1, Abner supposed to protect his king and king sons, when war was happening, but he did not his job. When David the guy from other is stealing a spear, which is lying next a king, while king is sleeping. Abner did not stop David from stealing. In the end king both sons died and somehow Abner manage to escape. In Samuel book 2, when asked him to suppose him. He made unreasonable amounts of demands from king. His one demand was to take over one of king sons throne. So, he can rule the kingdom. When king refused to accept his demands, he threated to join David army
