During the early to mid 1800’s, the anti-slavery movement grew dramatically. Although the number of abolitionists grew, some favored a gradual end to slavery because they believed that it would die out on its own if slavery was kept out of the western territories while a discrepancy of abolitionists demanded slavery to end everywhere, at once. To help with the abolitionist movement, African American Abolitionists Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm set up the newspaper, “Freedom’s Journal” in the early 1820’s to tell the stories of the brutal treatment of slaves in the southern states.
