Aboriginals

Divergent Value System-
• Aboriginals are so different,
• Land, can never own the land
• Aboriginal’s don't believe u can own the land
• That's why they are free roaming like gypsy’s
• All the land the used to roam in were now taken over
• Food supply is now gone
• Cannot get along because value system is tot different
• Have to use all the parts of an animal never wasted or thrown away
• Don't stay in one location because their spirit will die
• Don't stay in one spot the whole time
• Need to free their spirit
• Decide that they’re going to send them to reservations
• Said they’re going to give them more room to expand
• Reservations don't work
• Different life system, values
• Cant get along

Indian Act→ residential schools
• Treat aboriginals like children
• Gov. is supposed to take care of them
• Protect them from the immigrants who are coming
• Not really a protection
• Gov. does whatever the want to them
• Res schools- children will be easier taught than adults
• The way to change minds of aboriginals, take away all the children and change their values
• Run by the catholic church and nuns
• Gov never checked to see what was going on
• They were abused
• They were sent back and they couldn't remember their language
• Didn't like the food
• Religion was different, they don't know any of the rituals
• Boys become men and they have to go out for 3 days and survive get everything (hunting)
• Elders prepare u for that
• Survival skills
• Come back from residential schools and don't know what’s going on
• Land-gov decides there are certain parts of land they want, and the aboriginals will have certain land given back to them
• Nunavut already promised to them

• And treaties and gov will take a long time to give it to them
