What is the leading cause of death among infants every year? Car crashes? Gun violence? Freak accidents? Nope, none of those. Abortion kills more children annually than any of these. According to the article “Induced Abortion in the United States” published by the Guttmacher Institute, nineteen percent of all pregnancies—excluding miscarriages— in 2014 ended in abortion (“Induced” para. 2). Nearly one out of every five infants were aborted. And while the number of abortions has continued to decrease since 2014, one abortion per year is still one too many. Abortion should be illegal because abortion is murder, abortion can cause mental and physical issues on the mother, and abortion erases the potential contributions of a human being to society. …show more content…
Furthermore, the law considers a fetus as a human being.
The National Right to Life Committee says in “State Laws that Recognize Unborn Victims,” under Mississippi law effective July 1, 2004, the term “human being” includes any unborn child at every stage of gestation (“State” para 14). The biggest argument for abortion is that a fetus is not life or a human being until the fetus has become “viable”, meaning able to survive outside the womb. But as previously stated, the law states that a fetus at any point of gestation is a human being. Abortion is the killing of a human being, therefore, abortion is murder. According to “Should Abortion be Legal” published on ProCon.org, “A 2002 peer-reviewed study. . .of more than 173,000 American women found that women who aborted were 154% more likely to commit suicide than women who carried to term” (“Should” para 6). Not only is abortion murder, but abortion can also lead to severe depression and an increased risk of suicide. Along with depression and psychological issues, having an abortion has also been linked to other health problems such as future miscarriages. Having an abortion has even been linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. The article “Should Abortion be Legal” continues on, “about 15% of first-trimester miscarriages are attributed to to a poor history of induced abortion” (“Should” para 16). In addition to being murder, abortion is also very dangerous for the mother. The risk of abortion far outweighs the benefits, if there are any.
