The theme of how absolute power corrupts absolutely is also evident in the fact that the The book Legend opens in a new society, long after the event which caused the society to shift from being the United States of America to being the Republic. Enough time has elapsed, in fact, that few to no citizens even know of or remember the old way of life, similar to the final outcome of the society in Animal Farm. However, contrary to Animal Farm, the citizens (not working in a high government position) of Legend know that they are being treated unfairly. Although the reader can gather that some of the citizens of The Republic have at least heard of the former society - the United States - the government has corrupted the citizens so that they do not know just how controlling and bad their society is, particularly for those in the slum sectors.governments of each society use fear and violence to keep the citizens from rebelling. In Animal Farm, the pigs constantly use fear to scare the animals into not defying the pigs and believing that the pigs are always right. One thing the pigs constantly remind the animals of throughout the book is that if the pigs did not get their way - which, to the pigs, was the only way - Farmer Jones would return to the farm and life for the animals would change - mostly for the pigs - back to how it was before Jones’s expulsion: “‘Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would come back! Surely comrades,’ cried Squealer almost pleadingly, skipping from side to side and whisking his tail, ‘surely there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back?’” (23). This, of course, is something that none of the animals who had been a part of the rebellion want because they know what life had been like when Jones ran the farm, as the rebellion is still relatively fresh in the memory of
