Social justice issues have many faces and affect groups in different ways. In general, a social justice issue is about inequality: economic, racial, political, gender, health access, power, etc. The abstinence-only model, also referred as the disease model, for substance abuse has been around for multiple decades. This treatment model has influenced the lives of millions yet does not work for everyone. Substance abusers and misusers are each at different levels of their recovery when they enter treatment. Some are mandated to seek treatment and others made the choice to overcome this disease on their own. Regardless, understanding each individual’s motivation to change their lives is important to their path of sobriety.
