Personal experiences change your initial values into values that change your future. Some may argue that personal experiences don’t always change your values. In Judith Cofer Ortiz’s “Abuela Invents The Zero” The main character constancia, and in Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” the main character Tom goes through experiences that changes their values. Personal experiences shape your value in the future.
The initial values are shown by the characters in each short story. In “Abuela Invents the Zero” Constancia is a teenage girl that likes to hang out with her friends and isn’t worried about older people. In the story Constancia tells us what her plan is, “I plan to stay very busy the whole time she’s with us so that I Won't…show more content… In “Abuela Invents The Zero” Connie and Abuela went home without talking to each other, Abuela wouldn’t even accept her help to the door. When they walked in Abuela say, “ You made me feel like a zero, like a nothing.” Paragraph sixteen (Ortiz Cofer) this makes Connie realise what she did and she made her Abuela feel. Connies mother told connie,”You should know, Constancia, that if it wasn’t for the old women whose existence you don’t seem to value, you and I would not be here.” Paragraph twenty (Ortiz Cofer) Then Connie is sent to her room to consider a number she hadn’t thought about until today. In “ The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer” Tom manipulates boys to give him treasures while they do his work. Tom realises that he can do this, and do it well, so he can do it more. The narrator says at the end of the story, “ The boy mused awhile over the substantial change which had taken place in his worldly circumstances, and then wended toward headquarters to report.” Paragraph thirty-two (Mark Twain) As you can tell even Tom is stunned by what he did today, and doesn’t seem reluctant at the fact of manipulating boys in giving their stuff to him so they can do his job.
