The career I plan to pursue after college is pharmacy. Pharmacists are responsible for doing many things while on the job. A pharmacist fills the prescription from a physician, verifying that it is the proper amount of medication to give. They also have to check whether the prescription will interact negatively with other drugs that the patient is taking or with the condition they are in. Pharmacists may also be required to instruct patients on how and when to take the prescribed medication. They should also advise patients on the potential side effects the medication may cause them to experience. Some patients may ask about general health topics, such as diet, exercise, and managing stress. Pharmacists complete insurance forms and work with insurance companies to make sure patients get the medicines they need. They have to oversee the work of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists in training (interns). Pharmacists can work in many different areas. They can work in pharmacies and drugstores. Pharmacists can work in state, local, and private hospitals. Also, they can be in grocery stores and department stores. Pharmacists spend most of the day on their feet. Most work full time and can be asked to work nights and weekends. You have to meet many requirements to become a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacists must have a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from an accredited school. They also must be licensed, which requires passing two exams. All Doctor of Pharmacy programs require applicants to have taken postsecondary courses. Applicants need at least two to three years of undergraduate school or a bachelor’s degree. Doctor of Pharmacy programs usually take four years to complete. Pharmacist’s employment is expected to increase by 25 percent from 2010 to 2020. Scientific advances lead to new drug products.
