As Rutgers being such a large diverse university, there are a variety of events to attend and grasp new information. One of the events that I attended was the Access Med Workshop on October 13. The Access Med program works with ODASIS which is The Office for Diversity and Academic Success in the Sciences and helps you get into medical school. In the workshop, they provided information of what Access Med is and how it works which I learned from that day. Also, I learned that to be eligible for the Access Med program, one must have an ethnicity as a Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American. The Access Med program is separated into two phases, Phase I and II. In order to be eligible for Phase I not only do you have to have a certain ethnicity, but needs a full year of chemistry, biology, and classes in mathematics and in english. Another requirement is having a GPA of 2.9 or better. Once one is in Phase I, one is required to attend workshops, seminars at Rutgers University, and special medical conferences at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. One will have the opportunity to speak with a health care professionals, receive advice on one’s career choice and any academic assistance that is needed such as tutoring. I learned that not only does this program guide you to medical school, but provide resources with any assistance that one might need for any courses. This information has taught me that is requires hard work and dedication if one wants to achieve success to being accepted to a medical school. It is very helpful to know that the student receives counseling, career guidance, and enjoyed the amount of effort that is put into this program to help one succeed into medical
