A Contract with God
From the initial first few pages, I felt that maybe this way just old literature and the story itself was just going be some fictional story. But as I grew deeper and deeper in the book, I noticed that this story actually pertains to the modern world very much so. There are so many people today like Mr. Hersh; who go through a rough time, finally find God and make these covenants with him. They assume that if they do good things, like being a good Samaritan and all that, then God will bless them for it. I have personally done this. I made my own “Contract with God” in High School saying that if I was good, he would give me a girlfriend. He ended up not giving me one in High School, but I got one the first month I entered Point Loma Nazarene University. So when bad things do happen, like unfortunately a daughter dying, many become deceitful and do their own thing. Maybe not as high scale as using the Church bonds, but finding and gambling money other ways.
Another thing that seemed very modern was all the infidelity going on. Like the street singer having an affair and Goldie making love to a youngster. This is becoming a more common occurrence nowadays. From marriage affairs to older lady cougars. It’s now almost acceptable to have affairs. Every year, we here about another athlete, congressmen or someone you personally know having an affair. When this book was written, affairs were probably unheard accept in stories, but now its just everyday news next to the weather forecast. And the story of Goldie trying to marry rich seems fairly prevalent in a way. Many tend to want to
