Achilles of the Myrmidon and Hector of Troy are two of the greatest heroes detailed in the story of the Iliad by the poet Homer. Achilles, the great Greek hero of the Trojan War, born to the immortal nymph Thetis and to the mortal king Peleus of the Myrmidons. None could rival Achilles in the art of war. When he was born his mother Thetis tried to make him immortal by dipping him into the river Styx, however, he was left vulnerable from where she held him, his heel. Hector, was first born son and heir to King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy. Hector is the embodiment of what heroism is, he is loyal to his country above all else, loyal to his family, and finally loyal to himself. He is chivalrous, noble, courageous, and loyal perhaps even loyal to a fault. Often times you will find that Heroes share many common traits. They are usually good-looking, exceptional fighters, but it is the differences that really define what makes a hero different from one another. …show more content…
Achilles at the age of fifteen lead the entire force of the Myrmidon army which consisted of fifty boats each with fifty men, or 2500 soldiers. Achilles martial prowess was instrumental in taking the fight to the city of Troy, for when Achilles withdrew his army from the war, Hector and the Trojans pushed the remainder of the Grecian army back to their boats and were on the verge of victory. While Achilles has mostly been regarded as the better warrior, Hector could be considered as a better leader. Hector lead his army to kill and impressive 31,000 Greek soldiers in the battle of Troy and would have defeated the Greeks had Achilles and his men not returned to the war. Both of these great men earned the respect and fear of foe and friend alike not only for their skill in battle but for their leadership and being able to rally the men around them to
