Acid rain harm or kill individual fish, reduce population numbers, completely eliminate species from a lake, and decrease biodiversity. The acid rain dissolve the aluminum from the watershed soil into the lakes or streams as it flows over it. Consequently, lake water with low pH (higher acidity) had an ability to release toxic elements and compounds from sediments into the water and more solubility, mobility of the toxic chemicals and heavy metals in the water. The water facility that had intake water source from lake with higher acidity than the normal ranges (6-8), will face frequently clogging screen and sand fitter issue at the screening and sedimentation process associated with the damage and corrode pipes and other system failure at water treatment process. Why?
“Lakes in the northeast United States, Appalachian highlands, upper Midwest and the mountains of western North America are most disposed to have pH levels below 5. In 2006, the National Atmospheric Deposition Program noted that acidic precipitation lower than pH 5 falls downwind of heavy industrial areas, and it is worst in the Ohio River Valley region of the upper Midwest as a large concentration of power plants in the Ohio Valley. The pH of precipitation in this region can be at dangerously low levels below 4.3. The entire region east of the Mississippi River in the United States is especially vulnerable”. Why/ sulfur dioxide (SO2), ammonia (NH3), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and acidic particles are the source of acid rain and they released into the atmosphere by burning of fossil fuels in power plants (especially coal, in electric power plants) and cars. As is it descripted as man-mad source pollutant (point source). (Acid Rain and Acid Deposition. (n.d.).
