1. The significance of a lower-than-normal hematocrit is it may mean you are anemic, which means the percentage of red blood cells is below the lower limits of normal for that person's age, sex, or specific condition, for example, pregnancy or high-altitude living. b. The effect of a bacterial infection on the hematocrit is the red blood cell production would decrease, which decreases the RBC to whole blood volume, and the reason for this is the white blood cell count would increase because the WBC's are fighting off the infection. 2. The development of lymphocytes compared to the development of other formed elements is they both are developed in red bone marrow. B lymphocytes develop in red bone marrow, T lymphocytes develop in red bone marrow and mature in the thymus. 3. Erythropoiesis is the production of Red Blood Cells and the factors that speed up and slow down erythropoiesis are when oxygen delivery to the kidneys falls it speeds up and slows down when there is sufficient oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. 4. If a person with Type B blood were given a transfusion of Type O blood nothing would happen because a person with Type O blood is a universal donor. 5. a. If a WBC has a round nucleus surrounded by blue halo of cytoplasm with no visible granules it is a lymphocyte and is used to fight immune responses. b. If WBC contains dense blue-purple granules that hide in nucleus it is a basophil and speeds up the inflammatory reaction and is involved in hypersensitivity reactions. c. If WBC has a U-shaped nucleus and a blush, foamy cytoplasm with no visible granules it is a monocyte and assist in phagocytosis and cell debris cleanup. d. If WBC contain small, pale lilac granules and a four-lobed nucleus it is a neutrophil and is active in phagocytosis. e. If WBC contains red-orange granules and two-lobed nucleus it is an eosinophil and releases enzymes that fight the effects of
