Stress, anxiety, depression, and mental illnesses are all very common in our population today and some cases can even be life threatening. Exercise is beginning to become associated with most of these things in a positive way that can reduce risk of these illnesses. Exercise has been found to have emotional benefits for both genders of all ages and has also been “associated with improving the quality of life of those living with schizophrenia” (Callaghan). In recent times, exercise, such as running, has shown to have a bigger effect on depression than psychoanalysis. It may even have an “antidepressant effect in healthy individuals and among those with profound multiple disabilities” (Callaghan). Exercise has raised self-esteem, improved sleeping patterns and general behavior of ones with schizophrenia, and has shown to reduce auditory hallucinations. State anxiety is characterized with autonomic nervous activity and trait anxiety is characterized with apprehension, worry, and nervousness across many situations. Chronic exercise had a bigger effect on anxiety than did acute exercise. Aerobic exercise is also associated with higher reductions in anxiety. For reduction in anxiety, more than a twenty-minute duration of exercise is necessary. Exercise gives a similar effect of having a warm bath by raising the body temperature and relaxing muscles which will lead to a reduction in anxiety; or, other views show that exercise stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and increases adrenaline. Once it is activated, acetylcholine is released, which has a relaxing effect as well. Exercise can also be used as a distraction to take one’s mind off of a stressful event happening in their life at the moment. Of the types of exercise that were experimented with, yoga showed the highest effect for producing improvement in cognitive
