Abstract
This study examined adaptive narcissism and its effect on self-esteem and optimism levels and quality of life. Currently, there is a lack of recent research in this area. An online quiz, available to all first year Psychology 1102 students, was used to collect the data. The quiz included questions from the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Rosenberg Self- Esteem Scale, the Life Orientation Test- Revised and the WHO Quality of Life Scale. It was found that individuals who report higher levels of adaptive narcissism on the NPI-16 also reported high levels of self-esteem on RSE scale. Although narcissism is defined by the oxford dictionary as “Excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one’s physical appearance,” adaptive narcissism can be beneficial to ones well-being. Such positive traits of adaptive narcissists include self sufficiency. This experiment will evaluate narcissism’s effect on self esteem levels, dispositional optimism and quality of life. Self esteem is an individuals overall emotional evaluation of self worth, dispositional optimism is a disposition that represents the extent to which people have positive expectations about their own future outcomes, and quality of life is the general well-beings of individuals. These will be compared using 4 different questionnaires that will identify this correlation. It is important to also acknowledge that this report is about trait adaptive narcissism and not Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
