It is recommended that men should consume no more than 38 grams of added sugar, which is nine teaspoons and women should consume no more than 25 grams of added sugar, which is six teaspoons. While in reality the average American adult consumes about 110 grams of added sugar, which is about 22 teaspoons of sugar. Over consumption of sugar leads to an increase of insulin levels, uric acid and lactic acid. An increase in insulin levels would deposit more energy from food into fat cells, which may lead to obesity. Uric acid is responsible for inflammatory substances and vascular muscle cell production. An overconsumption of sugar may increase your uric acid levels and your body will produce irregular hormone levels, which leads to metabolic syndrome, a precursor to diabetes. Some sugars are important for your body, others are unhealthy when over consumed. Some of these aliases are: cane sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, corn syrup, malt syrup, molasses, and honey. The healthy sugars are the ones that are naturally found in whole foods such as vegetables and fruits. Whole foods contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. The fiber with the naturally occurring sugar makes a big difference because it slows down the absorption of sugar, which regulates the effect on blood sugar (Sass, 2011). All natural sugar found in whole food is good sugar. Bad sugar is any type of sugar that isn’t naturally occurring such as added sugar. Sugars that contain calories without fiber or nutrients are called added sugars. If the conscious consumer can understand the differences between naturally occurring sugar and added sugar then they have better influence over their food choices.
