“One particular trend that is causing concern is the nonmedical use of Adderall, a prescription stimulant designed to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) This drug behavior occurs most frequently in Americans aged eighteen to twenty two years old, it is twice as common among those attending college, who use the drug as a study-aid to enhance alertness and concentration.” (2010, Karim Tazin). Adderall is a drug given to children who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This drug has different effects on children and adults. Nowadays college students use this drug to help them motivate themselves in the classroom. Though taking Adderall leads to higher concentration levels of those diagnosed with ADHD, abuse of it can negatively cause long term effects on the body.
Concentration
Adderall is a stimulant; it becomes appealing to the stressed, tired, over-worked students and teenagers. (2009, Themes by Viemonsta Networks). Most students take the drug thinking the drug will help them stay up and focus on writing better papers. In most cases the students are correct. Adderall works like it is supposed to. In some cases it makes the student more focused on her work, makes her more alert, and increases their energy and motivation, which ultimately would result in a better educational outcome. Adderall help the children who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the classroom to be calmer and focus in class. The children that really take the drug for the being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) helps the way they think and act around other people. Make sure they take the medicine and do not miss a dose. The students who take the drugs just to help them focus are more likely to become addicted to the medication. Adderall is used among most college students to give them a mental boost. “The use of stimulants is on the rise among adult professionals.” (Schwartz, Casey 2010, Paragraph One) Scientists are having a hard time to show that Adderall actually works to give students good concentration while doing working and playing in extracurricular activities.
Long term effects of Adderall Taking Adderall over a long period of time causes long term side-effects. The mental affect is that there is increased focus, attention, and motivation. The affect that Adderall has on the heart is that it increases the diastolic blood pressure. The effect on the brain from the use of showed that most students improved overall in academic performance. Most children taking Adderall for long term use shows to be associated with slight weight loss and even possibly slight height reduction. The long term effects of Adderall have negative side effects. Some of the effects are so severe some of the patients had to stop taking Adderall after a long period of time. In a study 33% had a loss of appetite, 17% experienced insomnia, 26% suffered headaches, and 20% to 40% of all Adderall users suffer from one or more side effects. Adderall is very addictive when taking it without a prescription. At the best, the drugs show a small effect; more often, researchers come up with negative findings unable to show a clear-cut, across the board improvement on any of a wide variety of tasks, from those measuring memory, to mental flexibility, to concentration, to impulse control. Abuse of Adderall One thing there is a problem with today in society is the abuse of drugs. Some Physicians diagnose patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). So the patients think that they can sell them on the streets to make money. Drug abuse and addiction can affect almost every system in the body. Teenagers abusing Adderall and related drugs in the hope of gaining improvement in test scores, whether they are standardized tests or grades.
