Addiction Is Voluntary

I disagree with the belief that addiction is a matter of free will and that it should be treated as a voluntary act. Addiction “a strong and harmful need to regularly have something or do something.” I believe that trying or doing something that is known to cause addiction is voluntary, but after that , the need to have it over and over again is out of one’s hands. There are so many things out there to be addicted to that are harmful including drugs, alcohol, and adult movies. Then there are other things to be addicted to that many people don’t think about including, food, electronic devices, people, and music. Whether it is major or minor they are all an addiction then can cause a person to act out or dramatically different when having their addiction taken away from them. One of those things was that he was addicted to alcohol. He drank often and constantly. His attitude began to change. First, it began with out outburst that then started to become violent. After that, his addiction lead to many arguments and a terrible environment at home for my mother and her siblings. Over time his actions worsened and eventually he began to grow violent. As a result my aunt actually decided to stay with her grandmother instead of being with her parents because of the intense environment at home. He was a great guy when he was sober but he always had that need for alcohol and when alcohol entered his system a whole new person came out. Unfortunately my grandfather’s addiction was never treated. He continued to drink
