When it would come to being an Athenian or a Spartan, there couldn’t be a much easier choice for me personally. Spartan women had a more qual standing to men than Athenian women in multiple respects, but that’s where most of my respect for Sparta comes to an end. Most if not all of my reasons against choosing Sparta are based upon my convictions, however, so my opposition to Sparta is unapologetically subjective. Firstly, Spartan women were given more respect than in Athens, both as people and as citizens, but that doesn’t excuse the deplorable conditions under which Spartans begin anything similar to a courting process. I would be left to die and my brother would thrive as a Spartan man. I have little respect for any society in which infanticide is not born from necessity or mercy, and Spartans almost exclusively based it upon physical potential. The extremity of Spartan conformity makes the societal structure seem like little more than a hive buzzing with human drones. In Sparta, boys are born to fight, serve in the military, father young, and die for their nation, and women are born only to reproduce more men. Culture and individuality languish in favor of the pursuit of glory in war and fulfillment of national pride, which is far more befitting of a society of orcs than of humans. All of the above arguments can easily be met with a completely valid if not irrefutable counterargument. That being said, when it comes to what I want for myself, I know that I would suffer immensely as a Spartan.
