In the book of 1984 by author George Orwell, creates a modern city called Oceania which is a state that the Party and Big Brother tries to control and manipulate its population. Throughout the book they come up with several ways to control such as, privacy restrictions, supervision,propaganda, changes in the language to create fear and a phobia in order to gain control of the people's mind. Today we see technology advancing and it is bringing us a lot of advantages and disadvantages. Technology has been advancing faster than ever before and is impacting the world in many ways, however technology has created such a great power that people uses its for power and it becomes a dangerous weapon. In 1984, Orwell wrote that people have no privacy and the government of Oceania has control of their way of living and their personal life which has become a reality in the world we live in today. “ Winston kept kept his back turned to the telescreen. It was safer , though, as he well knew, even a back can be revealing” (1.1.6) This is another example of 1984 that Orwell depicted in his book which is now being illustrated in today’s society. People’s privacy are not being protected. Today people’s privacy is at risk with the conflict between Apple and the FBI. If Apple was to give the FBI the encryption software to let them unlock one of the iphones, it will be an open door to anyone in the world and people’s privacy will be endangered and at risk. Also people’s devices and social media are being monitored by the government and say it's to protect people's safety and find terrorist activity. The way I see it and find interesting about the thought police is the teaching of morals to the children that are being taught by parents and teachers and other mentors. Since we were little we were taught right from wrong. In the book 1984, the kids were manipulated to tell on their parents whenever they did anything wrong. That is what happened to one of Winston’s peer. Kids in today’s society are influenced by propaganda and social media and it revolves around them because they are engaged on their devices all the time. The thought police in this case is the social media and other propaganda that are brought up. Kids are being taught by teachers a half the day and the other half is their parents and social media. They are easily influenced and manipulated because they have no experience on anything so whatever they see and listen to they will find it appropriate unless they are told that is wrong from their parents, Can the thought police be the people who taught us? Our mentors? Are we being manipulated into learning what they have learned from their mentors? Can this be one big cycle that we have been put through since the beginning of time? If so, is there any way we can break this cycle and be free from the propaganda and manipulation we have been
