Isolationism had occurred prior to the time of when America had practiced this policy. Multiple countries, had used this, most notably Japan. The idea behind isolationism is to prosper in the ideas and have their own special concept to their culture rather than have it dictated by other nations. Without interference, one might believe a nation could get so much done in terms of evolving their people, whether its technology or culture. Of course, this all seems just right on paper, like nothing can go wrong. Isolationism has many disadvantages attached with its advantages as seen as ‘I Am a Rock’ by singer Paul Simon. This song was created with many symbolic tools that represent how foreign policy acted during the Great War. Simon criticizes …show more content…
This is the subject for the majority of the song as every other stanza features it in the same way and same wording. This seems to represent that the actions in the middle will still have the same results in isolationism. The goal isolationism is seeking is to not feel the need or get emotional over going to help others, which explains the same quotes over and over again, “I am a Rock, I am an Island”. In fact, this showing of isolationism as a country seems to had spread through every individuals life. This actually seems to represent brainwashing as well, because if you say something over and over again, people begin to actually believe it, and if its something like nationalism coming from isolationism it is something that all people will share in common. This chant seems rough on the outside and even the people on the inside because we know, whatever happens on the outside they will not be able to do anything and only watch. The feeling of the external power seems limited to the government which also might spark more of an outrage towards the people as they lost their right to have a say. However Simons does end up with the quote “And a rock feels no pain; And an island never cries.” This wraps up how the US looks in this time of isolationism. I am a rock by Simons really creates the illusion of how the United States was during the isolationism. The disadvantages and advantages seem to balance out and honesty looked like a good idea. Later however it did not seem that isolationism would work because of the outcome of World War 1, where the US was dragged into the war. After the war, it would financially make sense for the isolationism
