Advocacy Action
Our team chose to take action on the NDAA bill which a bill that was passed this year by the Senate with a 98-0 vote. The NDAA is a huge federal law that among other things specifies the budget and expenditures for the
Department of Defense. NDAA authorizes: the funding for the war in Afghanistan, increasing diplomatic missions worldwide, tightening the sanctions against Iran, increasing the funding for special forces, and last but not least, allowing for the indefinite detention of US citizens and residents. So, we will write a letter to
Senator John Cornyn explaining why we think that the NDAA bill is wrong and how it effects the people civil liberties. The NDAA bill is violating the civil liberties of citizens.
So, Maria had wrote out the letter to send to Senator John Cornyn explaining what we thought about the NDAA bill. She also explained how the people have the right to: “to be free from unreasonable search and seizure, due process, a speedy and public trial, judged by their peers, knowledge of the charges against them, the assistance of counsel with the ability to confront all witnesses, and the right to a writ of habeas corpus, which is a judicial mandate requiring that a prisoner be brought before the court to determine whether the government even has the right to continue detaining them, all clearly stated in the
United States Constitution (Articles 1 & 2, Amendments 4, 5 & 6) along with the
Universal Declaration of Human
