Before the Soviet Invasion, Afghanistan was a peacefully country. This country was a popular destination for tourists. Children grew up in safe environments and were unafraid of extremist influence. My mom and her family lived in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. This city was filled with stores, restaurants and hotels. This brought family and friends together. Afghans enjoyed the lifestyle in Afghanistan until it became a war zone country. Before the war began, the Soviets helped Afghanistan financially. They provided them with weapons and money. However, Afghans didn’t want the Soviets in their country because, they believed that they were hurting the government. My mom believed that the Soviets were trying to put Afghanistan to a bad end, she was right. In 1979, the peaceful days began to end. The Mujahideen rebelled against the Soviet’s taking control. Landscapes fell apart and the stores visited everyday were no longer there. My mom and her family felt unsafe and thought they were gonna die because of the war. But, they still stayed in Afghanistan for many years with the war going on. Students walked miles to get an education. But, they enjoyed school until the war began. During class, bombs would explode outside of their school. Children would see smoke appearing from the windows and would hide underneath their desks. Teachers would scream and were hopeless. Students were told to run to their family with the bombs nearby. When escaping from the bombs, some children got lost and didn't find their way home. Children no longer felt safe when going to school. My grandparents were tired of the war and knew it wasn't safe for them to stay in Afghanistan. Their family became lost and broken on what to do since options were low. The familiar landscapes and stores began to fade as freedom was easily taken
